CEDR buys the IDRS from CIArb.

separator1spacer

UNITED KINGDOM - IDRSThe Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) ranks among the best ADR institutions in the world, both as top mediator trainers and dispute resolvers. CEDR has long been regarded as a leading international trainer of mediators and, through its CEDR Solve dispute resolution service, as one of the largest independent (Alternative Dispute Resolution) ADR providers in Europe.

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) ranks among the world’s leading professional institutions, an institution with a pedigree established in 1915, and having been granted a Royal Charter in 1976. The Institute seeks to support not just arbitrators, mediators and other professional dispute resolvers, but the wide range of people involved in the field, including professional advisers, lawyers, expert witnesses as well as, of course, parties involved in disputes.

CEDR and CIArb are newsworthy following the sale of the IDRS, Ltd., owned by CIARb and sold to the CEDR on November 8.

IDRS Ltd administers a range of schemes for the resolution of consumer complaints including the CISAS (Communications and Internet Services Adjudication Scheme), and the POSTRS (Postal Redress Service). While flagship services (CISAS, POSTRS), the IDRS offers an astounding number of ADR services to consumers and businesses alike. The listing is nothing short of impressive:

Why the sale? CIArb and CEDR envisage the sale as the beginning of a closer and mutually-beneficial relationship between both organizations and have agreed to cooperate in the area of research on dispute resolution techniques. Together, they will look to further develop this relationship for the benefit of the mediation community and the maintenance of the highest standards across the profession, including the provision of professional development opportunities and events.

Michael Forbes Smith, CIArb's Director General said, "I am convinced that this move will prove beneficial to both organisations and to our many satisfied clients who have been served so well by IDRS. It allows us to concentrate on our core mission to promote and facilitate alternative dispute resolution throughout the world and we look forward to working with CEDR to create further opportunities for our research and thought leadership roles"

Dr Karl Mackie CBE, Chief Executive of CEDR, commented "The acquisition of IDRS complements CEDR Solve's services, traditionally in high-profile commercial business disputes, which have also recently expanded into consumer and public body adjudication services. We value the collaborative relationship which has developed between us over these discussions and are enthusiastic about taking this forward in the future."

They may very well cooperate as the press releases indicate. The CEDR gains by managing a rather large menu of ADR services it would take anyone –including the best, including the CEDR—several years to develop.

What about CIArb? What does it gain? Probably getting a load off their shoulders, a caseload, that is. We need to reread CIArbs’s statement after the sale: “It allows us to concentrate on our core mission to promote and facilitate alternative dispute resolution throughout the world.” Indeed, CIArb says defining themselves: “We exist for the global promotion, facilitation and development of all forms of private dispute resolution to maximise the contribution that dispute resolution practitioners make.” Regarding what they actually do, CIARB is clear: “We provide a wide range of services and support to members and others involved in dispute resolution, and offer the only globally recognised professional qualifications.”

Conclusion? one of many (ours): CIArb has been clear as to what they are and what they do for close to 100 years. Perhaps they were side-tracked with actual case administration through the IDRS. Everything points out to a return to the essentials of what made CIArb a proud institution, unique in every sense, an institution very much worth looking up to.
